You do not need previous experience: take your time and use the hints when you need them. Following the evidence
A date in a record may clarify a letter; a diagram may explain how a mechanism should be set. Keep the useful details together and distinguish what a document actually says from what you think it implies. The answer should come from the evidence you can find in the game.
This makes room for a slower kind of evening: read, make notes, compare ideas and return to an earlier discovery. If one line of reasoning has stalled, use a hint or let someone else explain how they read the clue.

Different ways to uncover a story
Some mysteries ask you to compare people’s accounts. Others leave you to reconstruct events from objects and documents. The balance changes from one adventure to another.
For example, in The Midnight Train , railway records, timings and instructions help you reconstruct the journey. Keep track of the order of events: a later copy of a document is not necessarily the original instruction.
In a quieter mystery, the rooms themselves carry much of the story. The Clockmaker’s Legacy takes this approach: Théodore’s instruments, notes and locked mechanisms leave a trail through his world. Examine what he left behind and work out how the different discoveries fit together.
Choose according to what your group likes doing. Comparing accounts invites debate; searching a room encourages close observation. Both need reasoning, and trying an opening room tells you more than a difficulty label alone.
Playing alone, as a pair or with friends
Playing alone gives you time to follow a thought without interruption. Keep a notebook nearby, pause when you want to and return to the saved game in the same browser. You do not have to finish in one sitting.
As a pair, say what you notice and explain your reasoning. A question from the other person can reveal an assumption you had not realised you were making. Swap control of the mouse so that both of you can explore.
